Cattle (colloquially cows) are the most common type of large domesticated ungulates. They are a prominent modern member of the subfamily Bovinae, are the most widespread species of the genus Bos, and are most commonly classified collectively as Bos primigenius. Cattle are raised as livestock for meat (beef and veal), as dairy animals for milk and other dairy products, and as draft animals (pulling carts, plows and the like). Other products include leather and dung for manure or fuel. In some countries, such as India, cattle are sacred. It is estimated that there are 1.3 billion cattle in the world today. In 2009, cattle became the first livestock animal to have its genome mapped.

How can I start cattle ranching in Texas?
Q. Please if you know what I need to do in order to start cattle ranching in Texas please let me know, only serious responses. Thank you.

A. Cattle ranching is not something to get into lightly. But if you are serious, find out who your county agricultural extension agent is. Meet with him (or her) and they can tell you the right way to get started in your area. As well as what types of hay, feed and medications you will require.

Where in North America is dairy cattle common and where beef cattle?
Q. It just came to interest me how different types of cattle breeding is spread across the continent. Would also be interesting to know if and what kind of affects climate and nature conditions have had on the matter.

A. Dairy cattle require alot of inputs in order to maintain high levels of milk production and are much more sensitive to heat stress. So in general the majority of dairy cattle would be located in north eastern north america, since high quality forage and grains are easily grown there and the temperature is much more moderate. Beef cattle on the other hand are much more hearty and in general have lower maintenance energy costs and therefore can be maintained on range/marginal lands where forage quality is not as great. There are alot a beef cattle raised on the range lands of the midwest and western range lands. This is just an over generalization...but it gives you an idea

How can I get my cattle dog mix to be less protective/territorial?
Q. Our dog is a cattle dog mix (don't know the father, but our guess is he was a German shepherd/Huskie) is great with people and other dogs when she is outside. But when she is in our apartment, she is very protective/territorial and is dangerous towards our guests. She gets along well with our neighbors when they come over, but people she does not know as well, she gets aggressive. We do not want to give her up, but she has got to do better with guests. Ideas??

A. Over protectiveness seems to be a common problem with ACDs (Australian Cattle Dogs). I have a female Border Collie/ACD mix, and she also went through a phase of aggression towards visitors. She would plant herself by my legs and growl at anyone who got close, and jab them in the calf with her nose if they walked by. What I've found with my dog is that she is very sensitive to how I'm feeling. If I'm stressed or exhausted or not feeling well, she acts aggressively towards outsiders because she thinks I need to be protected. Once I understood this, I took charge and put myself in a stronger leadership role, which has helped a lot. Your dog will probably never run up to strangers begging for attention, but being firm with her and… [cont.]
