A breed is a group of domestic animals or plants with a homogeneous appearance, behavior, and other characteristics that distinguish it from other animals of the same species. When bred together, animals of the same breed pass on these uniform traits to their offspring, and this ability—known as "breeding true"—is a definitive requirement for a breed. Plant breeds are more commonly known as cultivars. The offspring produced as a result of breeding animals of one breed with other animals of another breed are known as crossbreeds or mixed breeds. Crosses between animal or plant variants above the level of breed/cultivar (species, subspecies, botanical variety, even different genera) are referred to as hybrids.. Breeds are usually not classified scientifically; instead being grouped by breeders according to similar characteristics. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "breeds" Why do some breeds have their dew claws removed and others do not? Q. Is it a breed standard to have them removed in some breeds or is it a choice made by the breeder? I'm just curios because my lab had his removed when he was a pup, but my parent's GSD's have theirs intact. Although their oldest has gotten his poor dewclaw snagged and infected a couple times. Poor guy! What is the reason for leaving them intact on some breeds but having them removed on others? Asked by Amerz - Thu May 8 12:26:26 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Almost all breeds of dogs have their dewclaws removed early because they get snagged and tear easily, as you've noticed. Getting them removed later is major surgery, but with puppies it's simple and relatively painless. Removing dewclaws is a choice a breeder makes early, but for most dogs, it's a procedure that prevents pain and infection later in life. GSDs usually have their dewclaws removed, but some breeders do leave them on. However, there are certain breeds like the Great Pyrenees that are born with what are called "double dewclaws." These breeds are usually primitive, very old, and much more closely related to wolves. The double dewclaws are much stronger than most dog's single dewclaws and are required in the breed standard, so… [cont.] Answered by rara-avis - Thu May 8 12:33:46 2008 Are there any breeds of dogs that are better with cats than others? Q. I have a 1 year old Bengal cat and would love to get a dog. Are there any breeds of dogs that are better with cats than others? Asked by Billie - Thu Jun 4 01:22:40 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. Some people think so. Others don't. A calm retriever, or something like a retired Greyhound or another breed that doesn't bother chasing for life, will do better than the average terrier, pit bull or else. Answered by RodiKenley - Thu Jun 4 01:32:05 2009 What are some dog breeds that are completely devoted to their owners?
Q. I want a dog that will be completely devoted to me, will easily trained to fetch, swims, will play well with my siberian husky, and is more of a watch dog but not to the point of being aggressive. Shoot me some ideas on some breeds that fit the bill. Thanks so much! Asked by Isaac - Fri Apr 16 19:18:15 2010 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. This is a training issue. Not a breed issue. The dog will be bonded with the person who does most or all of the work with them.
