What is the difference between animal science and zoology?
Q. I found animal science in major of agriculture, and zoology in major of biology. They sound like the same... Is animal science major for being a vet?
Asked by okiron - Thu Nov 23 21:10:58 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Animal science deals with domesticated animals - breeding, care, etc. It is a kind of applied zoology. Zoology covers the animal kingdom in general, from a purely biological perspective. Of course that is a very large field of study, so there are many specialized fields within zoology, like mammalogy, ornithology, herpetology, icthyology, entomology, etc.

What kind of career will a major in animal science get me?
Q. I have been thinking of majoring in Animal Science, but I'm not sure if it will get me the kind of career I want. I want to work with wildlife, like wildlife rehabilitation. I just want to be able to help injured wildlife. Will a major in Animal Science get me into this kind of field?
Asked by crazzysinger - Fri Aug 28 21:02:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The only good thing about helping animals is that they won't sue you. The bad thing is that no one will pay you either, unless you're feeding them to be eaten later. There are people that live on animal reserves in Africa who help injured animals. They are paid little, live in huts, and maintain tourism. Apart from eating, animals have the following uses: maintaining the environment and researching special compounds/poisons used for drugs (either by testing on or extracting from, e.g. venom from snakes is used for certain drugs) There's not a big market for wildlife rehabilitation

A. You need to go through an actual vet tech program at an accredited college. They have college's that allow you to do courses online so that you dont have to go to the school. By doing this program you will be getting an AS and be eligible to take the state board exam to become a registered vet tech.

Q. I am planning to take up the Calpoly pre-vet/animal science degree for my BS and since I know that getting into vet school is very competitive, would I still be eligible to transfer to med school even if I concentrated on animal science if I don't get accepted into vet school?

Q. I know that within the major of zoology, there are sub-sciences like mammalogy, ornithology, herpetology, icthyology, entomology, etc. But what are the topics taught in animal science? I'm trying to find a major that includes the study of animal behavior/animal psychology.

A. Animal science deals primarily with raising domesticated animals like livestock. Some knowledge of zoology is of course necessary to work in this field. But zoology itself is the study of animals as organisms, whereas animal science deals mainly with animals as economic resources.

Should I major in Animal Science or Pre-vet in order to become a Veterinarian?
Q. The University I was accepted to, Purdue has both pre-vet and animal science. SUNY only has animal science and because I am still deciding on which one I should attend, I would like to know what major I need to become a veterinarian.
Asked by .D. Au - Fri Feb 27 17:49:15 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Pre-vet is not a degree granting major. Purdue lists it as a major, but you earn no degree from pre-vet. All pre-vet is, is the list of courses that you are required to take to go to vet school. You can take those courses almost anywhere, even if it isn't specifically listed as a major. It is extremely difficult to get into vet school without a bachelor's degree. Only about 10% of the people that are accepted do not have one. Therefore, in addition to being pre-vet you will need to declare a degree granting major such as animal science. So, you can do this at either school. If you are a NY resident, then I suggest you go to SUNY. If you are an Indiana resident, then I suggest you go to Indiana. Vet school is extremely expensive… [cont.]

Is it true that you can't get a good job with an Animal Science degree(other than veterinarian)?
Q. Can I become a vet technician with a BS in Animal Science?
Q. I have my BS in HR Management, but would love to follow my passion and work with animals. A local college has a degree in Animal Science... the concentration I would probably follow would be companion animal science. Would a Vet hire someone with a BS in Animal Science as a vet tech or do they generally require someone with a vet tech certification. What else could I do with an animal science degree??
Asked by ABC123 - Mon Oct 13 10:25:04 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Actually, the answer is only maybe. Vet techs have their own special schools. They have to learn how to restrain animals, draw blood, insert catheters (both IV and urinary), take blood pressure readings, X-rays, dental cleanings, and a lot of other skills that they don't teach in an animal science degree. Most vet clinics now (especially those that are corporate run) want a registered vet tech. With a BS in animal science you might be able to find a clinic that's willing to hire you and train you, but only if they haven't had any RVT apply. You will also make a lot less than a registered tech straight out of school. Plus tech school is only two years and you'd be doing four. Another option is after getting your BS, go on to tech… [cont.]
