What is the difference between animal science and zoology?
Q. I found animal science in major of agriculture, and zoology in major of biology. They sound like the same... Is animal science major for being a vet?
Asked by okiron - Thu Nov 23 21:10:58 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Animal science deals with domesticated animals - breeding, care, etc. It is a kind of applied zoology. Zoology covers the animal kingdom in general, from a purely biological perspective. Of course that is a very large field of study, so there are many specialized fields within zoology, like mammalogy, ornithology, herpetology, icthyology, entomology, etc.

Q. I want to apply to UC Davis but I'm not sure what the difference is between the animal science and animal biology majors. i want to be a vet...
Asked by silverstardust_16 - Mon Mar 1 14:38:38 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Animal Science usually has a greater focus on agricultural animal management/efficiency/nut rition than animal biology, which focuses more on the actual physical structures/chemical pathways, cell bio, evolution and behavior. There is a lot of overlap (similar base courses), but animal science is more closely related to animals tied in to the economy.

What kind of career will a major in animal science get me?
Q. I have been thinking of majoring in Animal Science, but I'm not sure if it will get me the kind of career I want. I want to work with wildlife, like wildlife rehabilitation. I just want to be able to help injured wildlife. Will a major in Animal Science get me into this kind of field?
Asked by crazzysinger - Fri Aug 28 21:02:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The only good thing about helping animals is that they won't sue you. The bad thing is that no one will pay you either, unless you're feeding them to be eaten later. There are people that live on animal reserves in Africa who help injured animals. They are paid little, live in huts, and maintain tourism. Apart from eating, animals have the following uses: maintaining the environment and researching special compounds/poisons used for drugs (either by testing on or extracting from, e.g. venom from snakes is used for certain drugs) There's not a big market for wildlife rehabilitation

Can I use my degree in animal science to become a veterinary technician?
Q. I always have been interested in becoming a veterinary technician, and I am currently attending a four year college (Virginia Tech) and plan on graduating with a degree in Animal Science. If I take the license test (not sure what's it's called) to become a technician, is that all I have to do upon graduation? Thanks guys!!

A. i go to a community college where we have a vet tech program and it seems like there would be some other qualifications since they put in long hours at the clinic for hands on training. BUt it would have to do with your state licensing board i guess. They learn lots of things like catheters and iv's very specific to what they would do while at work.

A. I'm not sure which colleges would offer it, but every college will have a biology department. Biology is the foundation of all the fields you listed. Perhaps you should consider that, if you have an interest in life and studying living things. For careers, there are numerous careers you could enter with a degee in animal studies. You could be a field researcher, work at a zoo, work for a veterinarian's office, work for government environmental agencies, and work in universities as a researcher or professor to name a few.

The difference between zoology and animal science?
Q. I know that within the major of zoology, there are sub-sciences like mammalogy, ornithology, herpetology, icthyology, entomology, etc. But what are the topics taught in animal science? I'm trying to find a major that includes the study of animal behavior/animal psychology.

A. Animal science deals primarily with raising domesticated animals like livestock. Some knowledge of zoology is of course necessary to work in this field. But zoology itself is the study of animals as organisms, whereas animal science deals mainly with animals as economic resources.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine is not really a "major" but more of just the list of classes you need to take. I am planning to attend Veterinary school and am currently majoring in Biology. Did you know for most Vet schools you can major in anything? People most commonly major in a science, but some major in music, art, history, etc. Good luck!

How strange would it be to major in Animal Science if you're in Pre-Physical Therapy?
Q. Next year I'll be transferring to a 4 year college for Pre-Physical Therapy. Their website states that you can choose any major you'd like and they list a few that most students go with. But I want to eventually get into therapuetic horseback riding and see if I can incorporate that with my Physical Therapy training. As long as I have the core required classes, I should be able to take some Animal Science classes too, right? Or is that too far off the physical therapy track?

Where can I find animal science programs in England?
Q. I would like to eventually become a professor of veterinary science. In the states I would need a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine as well as a PhD in animals sciences. I am having trouble figuring out if the same goes for universities in England. It is my dream to go to school in England. The more prestigious the better. Does Cambridge have a pre-veterinary course of study? One would think they would since they have a vet school. This wasn't exactly a focused question but I guess what I am looking for is an explanation of the pre-veterinary experience in England.
Asked by kelszoids - Sun Aug 8 23:37:13 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They don't have a pre-vet program because there is no pre-vet equivalent in England. They go straight from doing their A-levels into vet school. Vet school there is an undergraduate program and takes 5 years.

A. Any kind of work with animals is very competitive. Just a few classes might be ok if you want to work at a shelter, a pet store, a vet assistant, work at a petting zoo, or other jobs that don't require a degree. Also these jobs that don't require a degree don't usually pay well. If you want to be a zookeeper or veterinarian you NEED a degree, not just a few classes. You could become a Vet Tech through distance learning. i want a job with animals, but not a vet. Help?

Becoming a K-9 officer, previous degree in animal science?
Q. Right now I'm in the middle of finishing my animal science degree in veterinary technology, but that is not my real passion. My real passion is to become a K-9 police officer. I know this position is highly sought after, and I also plan on having at least an associates degree in criminal justice. Will this help my chances of becoming a K-9 officer? Or will my previous education not do anything to help me? I get that I need to be promoted in to the position, but once I get that far will my degree help?

A. Having a college degree can help you become a police officer. Some police departments require candidates to have a certain number of college credits or a college degree, and some do not. Many of the departments that don't require candidates to have a degree, prefer them to. Having a degree may not help you become a K9 handler, but it surely won't hurt! Best of luck!
