How many worms do I need to start my worm bin?
Q. I have a 12 gal rubbermaid container and about thirty worms. I keep reading that you need a POUND! Is this true or do I have enough?
Asked by colleen p - Tue Jun 12 17:27:21 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've got the same problem. We started the worm bin a couple of months ago and just put some worms from the yard in there. I couldn't bring myself to buy worms! I think that it is a matter of having a critical mass of worms to multiply the population. We might eventually get a large population of worms, but it's going to take a long time. It's also a matter of having the worms, Eisenia fetida or Red Wigglers, that everyone suggests you have. I think we'll have to break down and buy some, but I don't know if we'll have to wait for cooler weather for them to be shipped to us. How do I get rid of little worms in my lemon tree leaves?
Q. I have a lemon tree tht has little 1/4inch worms that tunnel through the leaves. The leaves start off with littl serpentine lines throughout them then they wrinkle up. The worms spread pretty fast. I cut off every single leaf from the tree and sprayed the bark with insecticide. The leaves came back and the worms came back. I scanned the leaf to show the animal. Go to picasaweb.google.com and search lemon tree leaf worm.

A. Citrus leafminers are a relatively new pest of citrus. There is no practical way for a home owner to control them. They will not affect the new growth in the spring, but do alot of damage later in the year as populations increase. If it is a young tree you can drench the soil with an insecticide containing imidacloprid. You can buy this in Home depot or Lowes, made by Bayer. You will have to look at the active ingredients on the label.

A. It can take a few days before you start seeing worms. However, it can take up to 2 weeks to fully deworm a dog. (The entire lifecyle: Egg, larvae, worm have to be interrupted, killed, and passed.) A friend of mine got worms when she was little. She said they're itchy and you can feel them squirming around. o.o;

Why are there worms in the apricots on my tree?
Q. Last year there were worms inside the apricots on our tree. The apricots are beginning to show now. Is it too late to save the fruit from the worms this season?

A. Your problem is that you're not spraying. Go to a garden center for help. They will tell you what to spray, and when. Be prepared. You will be spraying every 2 weeks until harvest. It may already be too late, but check.

How do you get rid of the tiny worms on the fruit of a red mulberry tree?
Q. There are tiny worms on the fruit, but they are not bag worms. We would like to use the fruit, but need to get rid of the worms first! I know silk worms live on mulberry trees, but I thought they ate the leaves, not the fruit, and none of the leaves look as though they've been chewed on. Any suggestions?

Have you known anyone to actually get worms from their dogs?
Q. My puppy had worms, they're gone now, but was wondering if anyone had ever actually gotten worms from their puppy or dog? They always warn you of it, but I've never heard of anyone actually getting them from their pets. We have taken all the precautions, and of course, the puppy got her meds and the worms are not longer coming out in her feces. Just wondering. Thanks!

A. To those above, ringworm is not a worm, it's a fungal disease. To answer the question, yes. In societies where people have access to regular vet care and worming for their animals, human infections are quite uncommon. However, in third world regions in particular, a condition called visceral larva migrans is quite common. In a dog, roundworm larvae undergo a migration process through the body, which usually takes them through to the gut. When a human (children are at the highest risk) ingests worm eggs (through some sort of contact with dog faeces), the larvae still undergo a migration process but as well as reaching the gut can wind up anywhere in the body and often cause damage to whatever organ they happen to wander through. Worms? Is it suitable if I put the worms into pot plants?
Q. I found 3 worms in my broccolii. 2 were live and 1 was dead. Is it suitable if I put the live ones into 2 pots of plants? they are green.
Asked by Hi ^o^ - Sat Aug 23 02:35:35 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am not sure why you would want to put worms in potted plants. If they are green "worms" or actually caterpillars, they are cabbage worms and they attack broccoli and other cole crops. If you are talking about common earth worms, a flower pot is too small and would not have enough nutrition for them.

A. I had the same problem because I live in Florida. I took my cat to the vets after trying to cure the problem myself. I spent $40 for the office visit, $20 for the exam and $15 for them to check his stool. After spending $75 dollars he gave me a script for revolution and that was another charge of $55 dollars. How do you get rid of the worms and moths from the bird seed once they start getting into your food?
Q. I can't seem to get rid of the worms and moths. They are on my ceilings and everywhere else. I vaccuum, disinfect but it seems like it isn't helping. Is there a special trick to getting rid of them permanantly. Also I have young kids who are scared of the worms. So I need to do something fast. Not to mention I'm totally grossed out and worried about them crawling on us while we are sleeping.
Asked by buffy - Fri Oct 31 14:44:19 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The moths are probably breeding in your cages. Take as much as you can apart and if you can deep clean outdoors that's even better. I found them breeding behind the seed guards so take them off and clean there. Get rid of all leftover food immediately. Put it out for the outside birds. Freeze your food in small containers and either keep it well sealed or just take out enough for immediate use.Leave a very shallow dish of water out. You will get a few that way. Vacuum them up. The moth traps help too. But your best defense is CLEAN[cont.]

A. Go to the store and get some apple tree spray. It's the only way I know of. There might be "greener" ways, but none that I know. Just because you are spraying on "chemicals" doesn't mean its bad. Every substance in the universe is a chemical including water. Just spray the tree and wash the apples and you will have free apples to last you all year.

A. I have recently completed a parasitology class. First of all, how do you know you have an infestation with all these parasites? Some of the parasites you have mentioned are basically impossible to get rid of due to the fact that their contracted via the skin from the ground. The tapeworm generally resides in the human gut which habitates there from eating contaminated beef or something of that nature. Pinworms can be detected by the scotch tape method. To be honest I could go on and on about this subject but I cannot instruct you step by step due to the availability of characters I have to work with. I strongly suggest you find a really good doctor or better yet parasitologist to help you with this problem. I'm sorry, I have never heard… [cont.]

Asked by ibnmango - Mon May 1 22:52:57 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Watch for naked branches and poop, go out in the early evening, (I used to hear them munching), with a pair of tongs and pick them off and drop in a can with a lid, leave it in the sun and they will die. Watch for a large brown moth with eyes on it's back it is the one that lays the hornworm eggs. One can cause a bunch of munch but if you pick them off it is an easy quick solution.

How do I get rid of Tiny Red Worms in my pond?

How can I get rid of the worms, so I can put fish back in the pond.

A. The "worms" you're seeing aren't a parasite. These are a midge larvae. A midge is a small fly that lays it's eggs in the water to hatch, much like a mosquito. These are what's sold in pet stores as bloodworms, and any that the fish will see, they'll eat. The larvae themselves eat plant matter, and will construct a small tube of plant debris they will live inside. I get these in my ponds frequently, and I leave some dead plants leaves in for them, so I can harvest them for my bettas and guppies to eat. If you can catch one to look at it under a microscope, this is what it would look like: From the sounds of it, yours are still fairly small. Some species will get a little more than an inch long before they emerge from the pond as… [cont.]

A. I doubt that you have worms. Though you should get that checked out just to be safe. How often do you eat paper? You may have an eating disorder called Pica. That's when you get the constant urge to eat inedible objects such as paper, chalk, cotton, etc. You may want to get that (the eating paper thing) checked out also. It's not healthy and that's probably what's causing the stomachaches.

How can you tell if a kitten has worms?
Q. My 2 month old kitten has really bad gas. Right now she is sleeping on my lap. I had my hand on her belly, and it feels like there is something moving inside her stomach. Her vet gave her some wormer when we first got her, and I have recently given her some of the wormer you can buy at a pet supply store. I do not see worms in her feces. The only sign of worms is her bloated belly and that feeling of something moving.
