The dog (Canis lupus familiaris, pronounced /ˈkeɪ.nɪs ˈluːpəs fʌˈmɪliɛərɪs/) is a domesticated form of the Wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term is used for both feral and pet varieties. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history. Amongst canine enthusiasts, the word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch" (the female of the species).

The dog quickly became ubiquitous across culture in all parts of the world, and was extremely valuable to early human settlements. For instance, it is believed that the successful emigration across the Bering Strait might not have been possible without sled dogs. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, companionship, and, more recently, assisting handicapped individuals. Currently, there are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.

Over the 15,000 year span that the dog had been domesticated, it diverged into only a handful of landraces, groups of similar animals whose morphology and behavior have been shaped by environmental factors and functional roles. As the modern understanding of genetics developed, humans began to intentionally breed dogs for a wide range of specific traits. Through this process, the dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and shows more behavioral and morphological variation than any other land mammal. For example, height measured to the withers ranges from a few inches in the Chihuahua to a few feet in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called "blue'") to black, and browns from light (tan) to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a wide variation of patterns; coats can be short or long, coarse-haired to wool-like, straight, curly, or smooth. It is common for most breeds to shed this coat, but non-shedding breeds are also popular.

Can the worlds greatest dog trainer teach a male dog to control itself around a female dog in heat?
Q. Can a famous and distinguishable dog trainer like Cesar Milan train a male dog that's not neutured to calmly sit still next to a female dog in heat for a long time and not yelp and whine? Is it possible? I only hear about dog trainers and vets instructing to separate the dogs when the female dog is in heat. What about training the male dog to resist the urge of a female dog in heat and behave itself calmly?

A. I don't think that is ever possible. When a male dog is around a female dog in heat, I don't think they even know what's going on between them first smelling her and the ending result ha

What toy breed dog would be good to get for a beginner dog owner who is afraid of dogs and their bark?
Q. I get scared when larger breed dogs growl or bark. I got attacked by a corgi before and certain breeds make me nervous, but the breeds that I like are : Maltese, poodles, schnauzers, pugs and miniature mutts. Also, due to a mild allergy, dogs with coarse hair like labs tend to make my skin itch. Yet, poodles and cavalier king Charles spaniels and those breeds mentioned above didn't make me itch. A dog would give me an excuse to walk around and not look weird, especially when I go too close to people w/dogs.

A. small dogs do tend to bark much more, especially when they're young. A good idea for you may be to adopt an older dog (of a breed that you're not afraid of and doesn't make you itch) who's out of the excitable, snappy, puppy stages and is a little bit more calm. This doesn't necessarily mean an old dog, but I reccomend one who's at least about two years old. There are many, many of these types of dogs in animals shelters because so many people always want a puppy that they forget that the ones who are a little older still need good homes too. I think this would be a good idea for you becase it's easier to judge the personality of an adult dog than a puppy, and this way you would have the best chance of choosing one who could be a good… [cont.]

What dog myth did your parent have you believe about dogs when you were young?
Q. For me it was (My Mum told me this when we were young) You can't give a dog chocolate because it can't brush it's teeth. I have never given a dog chocolate because of this. Thank God, and I had no idea it could kill them. :) I wonder how many generations that was passed down?

A. That they got worms from eating potatoes. I am betting that someone way-back-when, gave their dogs fried potatoes, and they expelled worms the following day..( because of the excess stomach acids while digesting grease) I still hear that as still a common belief amongst some people.
