A fish is any aquatic vertebrate animal that is covered with scales, and equipped with two sets of paired fins and several unpaired fins. Most fish are "cold-blooded", or ectothermic, allowing their body temperatures to vary as ambient temperatures change. Fish are abundant in most bodies of water. They can be found in nearly all aquatic environments, from high mountain streams (e.g., char and gudgeon) to the abyssal and even hadal depths of the deepest oceans (e.g., gulpers and anglerfish). At 31,500 species, fish exhibit greater species diversity than any other class of vertebrates.

Food prepared from animals classified as fish is also referred to as fish, and is an important human food source. Commercial and subsistence fishers "hunt" fish in wild fisheries (see fishing) or "farm" them in ponds or in cages in the ocean (see aquaculture). They are also caught by recreational fishers and raised by fishkeepers, and are exhibited in public aquaria. Fish have had a role in culture through the ages, serving as deities, religious symbols, and as the subjects of art, books and movies.

What have the game fish gotten smaller in a heavily fished area?
Q. Over the years scientists have noted mature game fish have been getting smaller and smaller in heavily fished areas. When the fish are studied, these smaller fish are found to be the same age as the previously larger fish. Explain why this change may have occured.
Asked by i need help fast - Tue Dec 11 01:05:34 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Natural selection. The smaller the fish, the less likelihood that it would get caught. Fishermen do tend to favor bigger game. So the fishermen has routed out the large fish populations leaving the smaller varieties to propagate more. But then there maybe other explanations for this like change in the water composition, temperature, introduction of other biological components, etc... Complete facts has to be collected and presented to arrive at any workable hypothesis. Simply correlating the size of the fish and the extent of fishing practices may lead to conclusions that may be erroneous and misleading. Hope that helps. Cheers.

What fish can I have in a 20 gallon tank?
Q. I just got a freshwater tank, I wanted to see what kinds of fish will do well in there. I want to have a semi aggressive tank. What fish are really unique and would fit in a 20 gallon? Also are there and bottom feeder fish that don't get too big? Thanks!
Asked by Joe S - Sat Mar 8 19:09:52 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. as regards to bottom feeders i would recommend not getting a plec as the can grow um to 2ft usually 1ft in aquariums (i should know) clown loaches are much better also great to watch and do well in groups of 2-6 but also after time they may get large but 20 gal should be good for them there are many bottom feeders mainly loaches would be good but try to only have one species of loach in one tank. also you could get a red fin shark (rainbow shark) or red tail shark but only one as they are territorial fish and do not do well with others of the same species. tetras are great for middle feeders neon's and cardinals give great colour and effect when kept in groups of 6 or more and then you could also have some live bearers like mollies… [cont.]

What happens to fish when they are cold?
Q. How do sudden temperature changes affect fish and what about fish that are in cooler or warmer temperatures than they are used to? For example, in winter, if the tank heater dies it can sometimes go unnoticed by the owner and tropical fish are left in water about 14 to 17 degrees celcious. The fish don't die, but how does it affect them long term or short term? Does water temp affect water parameters like ph?

A. Tropical fish, being declined into colder temperatures due to a heater failure. Will become lethargic, less active, metabolism will slow down, colors will fade due to stress, in the end die. I doubt it can really effect them to become a permanent term, seeing once a heater is introduced they will perk up. An aquarium is not just a tank, it is meant to replicate a fishes home in the natural state, temperature included.
