The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a domesticated fowl, a subspecies of the Red Jungle Fowl. As one of the most common and widespread domestic animals, and with a population of more than 24 billion in 2003, there are more chickens in the world than any other species of bird. Humans keep chickens primarily as a source of food, consuming both their meat and their eggs.

Conventional wisdom has held that the chicken was domesticated in India, but recent evidence suggests that domestication of the chicken was already under way in Vietnam over 10,000 years ago. From India the domesticated fowl made its way to the Persianized kingdom of Lydia in western Asia Minor, and domestic fowl were imported to Greece by the fifth century BC. Fowl had been known in Egypt since the 18th Dynasty, with the "bird that lays every day" having come to Egypt from the land between Syria and Shinar, Babylonia, according to the annals of Tutmose III.

What is the difference between orange chicken and sesame chicken?
Q. I always thought that sesame chicken is just orange chicken with sesame seeds on it, but I am currently on Weight Watchers, and the nutrition booklet is showing that orange chicken has significantly more fat/calories than the sesame chicken.

Chicken usually cooked in oven, can I do it in the crockpot?
Q. I have teriyaki chicken that I have marinading. I usually cook it in the oven for 2 hours at 325 F, do you think I could cook it in the crockpot instead for like 5 hours? If so, should I cook it on high or low? It's chicken thighs with skin and bones.

How long can chicken stay in water?
Q. Last night I ran some water(room temp) and was soaking my chicken, which I normally do, but I fell asleep and awoke 9 hours later with the chicken in the sink still submerged in water. I put it in a container and placed it in the fridge. Is it okay to cook the chicken, or should I disgard it?

A. The advice alreafy is correct. Always - If in doubt, throw it out. Don't even ask. If you have doubts, you don't take a chance. A bit of advice for the future. Don't ever thaw chicken at room temperature. Either thaw it in the refrigerator, or if you are in a bind, a few minutes on defraust setting in the microwave. Then cook it immediately. There was a time when it was thought to be okay to thaw chicken in water, but it's no longer true. Even the length of time it might take to do it that way is dangerous. No meat should sit raw at room temperature at all... ever.
