Is there an alternative to horseshoes for a horse that will work just as well? Q. I would like to have a alternative for horseshoes so the farrier doesent have to keep coming out and checking them. Maybe some boots or something that I could just throw on and ride. Thanks! Asked by jakejtown - Sun Sep 28 10:17:48 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If your horses have strong enough feet and live in an area that doesn't require shoes, they can definitely go barefoot and then you'll only have to have the farrier come out every 6 weeks or so (varies from horse to horse) to trim the hooves. When you ride, they can go barefoot (depending on strength/condition of hoof and the terrain) or you can put boots on them. Easy Boots and Boa Boots are two very popular types that are easy to put on and easy to take off. There are other alternatives, just check with your farrier and see what he recommends. My friend who also owns horses told me that steel horseshoes are bad, and that I should use her barefoot trimmer. Can anyone explain if she is right? His feet look fine now and I really like my farrier, but want to do the best for my horse. What are the pros of a barefoot trimmer, and cons of a horseshoer? Thanks Asked by az - Sat Dec 27 16:31:16 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. barefoot shoeing is a dangerous con. my dad has taken up to 6 months to fix a botched job done by some "cowboy" who thinks he is a farrier. shoes are the best way to go. they have been around for centuries, so how can they be bad? shoes protect the foot from the ground, as you should know. sounds like your friend has been told a tall tale!!! Q. I bought a horse that has soft hoofs, they are almost flat and after the shoes were pulled and trimmed the Farrier said her hoofs were so soft that the shoe would not hold, He recommended Venice Turpintine, He said keep her inside for a couple weeks (our fields are wet) and then either put on regular shoes or if they are not good enough just glue on shoes.
