The donkey or ass, Equus africanus asinus, is a domesticated member of the Equidae or horse family. The wild ancestor of the donkey is the African Wild Ass, E. africanus. Traditionally, the scientific name for the donkey is Equus asinus asinus based on the principle of priority used for scientific names of animals. However, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature has ruled in 2003 that if the domestic species and the wild species are considered subspecies of each other, the scientific name of the wild species has priority, even when that subspecies has been described after the domestic subspecies. This means that the proper scientific name for the donkey is Equus africanus asinus when it is considered a subspecies, and Equus asinus when it is considered a species. In the western United States, a small donkey is sometimes called a burro (from the Spanish word for the animal). A male donkey or ass is called a jack, a female a jenny, and offspring less than one year old, a foal (male: colt, female filly). While different species of the Equidae family can interbreed, offspring are almost always sterile. Nonetheless, horse/donkey hybrids are popular for their durability and vigor. A mule is the offspring of a jack (male donkey) and a mare (female horse). The much rarer successful mating of a male horse and a female donkey produces a hinny. Asses were first domesticated around 3000 BC, approximately the same time as the horse, and have spread around the world. They continue to fill important roles in many places today and domesticated species are increasing in numbers, but the African wild ass and another relative, the Onager, are endangered. As "beasts of burden" and companions, asses and donkeys have worked together with humans for centuries. From Wikipedia under the

Q. For those who think all morals and ethics come through the Bible, if you are not cruel to animals and destroying the environment, what stops you? Asked by Old Man from Scene 24 - Tue Sep 23 22:58:24 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Animal cruelty was not allowed under the Law Covenant. Exodus 23:4 and 5 shows that their loads were to be reasonable. Deuteronomy 22:10 ans 25:4 stated they were to be worked humanely. Exodus 20:10, 23:12, and Deuteronomy 5:14 show it was a command that animals were to rest on the Sabbath. Concerning the earth, Revelation 11:18 says Jehovah God will "bring to ruin those ruining the earth." The earth was to be a glory to our Creator. How would you feel if you owned a home and the renters tore it up almost beyond repair. Would you allow it to go on till the home was beyond repair? Or would you evict those renters and rent to others who would care and respect your property? Courts point. Lets go along with the mock trial for now. How do we use the law to be allowed to plea for clemency. First: (I am using capital sentence law for a guideline. Q. I know most horses are able to begin backing at 2years old but i am not sure if donkeys are the same. I am thinking about buying a 9month old donkey and training it but i need to know what age i can begin backing. anyone know? Asked by Brooke T - Wed Aug 12 05:37:56 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Usually four years of age. You can start introducing the saddle at three but any weight before four will cause long term damage to limbs and backs. (The same applies to horses too - backing at 2 years is for monetary reasons and not for the welfare of the equine. Later backed animals, as a rule, have longer working lives) Answered by sue - Wed Aug 12 06:01:58 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Donkeys"
