Do you think I could get into these Universities?
Q. Okay, I live in Pennsylvania, I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I am seriously focusing on getting into the University of Texas at Austin (main campus longhorns!) or St. Cloud State University (MN). I want to major in journalism or Communcations and hopefully one day work for either Sports Illustrated, NBC Olympics, or ESPN. I currently have a GPA of 3.3 and an overall average of 87%. I am going to try my best to raise my GPA to at least a 3.5 and my overall average to at least 90%. My high school does not offer any AP classes, but they do offer Honors classes, which I am currently taking History Honors. My school does offer a college English and a college history class during my senior year and I am going to take both of… [cont.]

A. Absolutely. From what you've shown, it seems very likely to me and to the college admission staff that your daring selection of honors-level classes and abundance in a variety of extracurricular activities prove you to be an outstanding individual who's prepared for college. The primary obstacles about which you should be worried are SATs/ACTs and your GPA. SATs should be a breeze since you read and write plentifully (I assume in accordance with the information for which you provided us), but math may be a barrier which you must deal with as effective as possible. GPA is also an important factor in college admission (obviously), and I believe you are totally able to significantly raise your GPA up to the point where you are beyond the " [cont.]

A. I think you are very qualified to get in. I'm going to be attending UT-Austin next year as a freshman and to tell you the truth, its crazy how I got in. The main thing I think you should focus on is writing great essays. Start developing essay skills and especially organization. I think that is what helped me get accepted since to be honest, I don't have any volunteer hours and have only been in yearbook for 2 years. My rank was 85/488 when I got accepted (now 65) and my SAT score was 1680. My GPA is 3.1/4.0 so don't let that bring you down. I did take all available AP classes, but didn't exactly take the exams.I had little hope of getting in but my admissions essay is the one that helped me pull through. To sum it up: 1)Develop your… [cont.]
