holocaust: why are Afrikaner deaths in holocaust camps ignored?
Q. Why does the world ignore the Afrikaner holocaust, as imposed by the British, which allowed Jewish companies to get hold of the gold and the diamonds? Is the pain of Lizzie van Zyl and the up to 65% of boer child deaths of less worth than the 50% of Jewish deaths? Hitler apparently used the idea of transporting women and children in soiled cattle trucks from the Anglo Boer War starvation camps.

A. Maybe because the 'world' doesn't know ... you need to get a loud vocal lobby group like the jews have ... they keep the holocaust constantly in the news and never let anyone forget about it.

Q. Should South Africans in the US be called Afrikaner Americans?

A. Only white South Africans, since Afrikaaners were the Dutch-descended white South Africans. I think "African American" is stupid anyway. Someone who has just arrived from Kenya, for example, is not necessarily in the same position as someone descended from slaves in the states. Doesn't make sense. Too broad.

A. I'd have to say it had more to do with perceived superiority and protection, I'm not sure which order. Speaking to South African friends, life is not valued in Africa, in general, but it was to the Afrikaners. Therefore, they felt they needed protection against the blacks. (Of course, these are gross generalizations.)

Afrikaner of Afrikaanse?
Q. Wouldn't it be better to drop the word Afrikaner and consign it to the dustbin of history and use the word Afrikaanse, i.e. someone who speaks Afrikaans. This, I feel, would do a lot to help the cause of Afrikaans that seems to feel so under threat these days and also help throw off the burden of apartheid and Afrikaner nationalism that always overshadow the language. People always fail to note that Afrikaans originated in the mouths of the Cape Coloureds and white Afrikaners are a minority within the spectrum of native Afrikaans speakers. What do you guys think? The father of the baby boy is an Afrikaner and the mother is (English speaking) South African. They asked my wife and me for the naming but both of us are (English speaking) South Africans. They asked us for opinions and other suggestions. Frankly I cant think of suggestions for other names because I dont know many Afrikaans names. They have shortened the list down to Stephan Morne (pronounced Mor-nay) Jannie (pronounced Yan-nie) Charl (pronounced Sharl) Ettienne (pronounced Et-tee-enn) Reuben and they also need a middle name which can also be from this list or you can suggest one. Oh yeah their last name is De Villiers. [cont.]

Who was Hendrik Biebouw?
Q. I know that he is an Afrikaner. I was wondering if you Yahoo anwserers, know anymore information about him.
Asked by Anwsers - Mon May 19 03:42:35 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. The first person on record as referring to himself as an "Afrikaner" was Hendrik Biebouw, who, in March 1707, stated that he was an Afrikaner and did not want to leave Africa. Biebouw meant by this claim to resist his expulsion from the Cape Colony, as ordered by the magistrate of Stellenbosch. The term is intended to indicate a first loyalty and a sense of belonging to the territory of modern South Africa, rather than to any ancestral homeland in Europe. In that regard its usage is similar to the term American, Canadian, Australian etc. when applied to the European descended populations of those countries.

Couple of Questions about South Africa?
Q. whast the difference between Afrikaner person and a Boer person. I've been reading and watching the movie "the power of one" and i'm whats the difference. Also, what group would the English fall into? And do most people in South Africa speak English? Thanks in Advance

A. Strictly speaking a Boer is the Dutch word for farmer and an Afrikaans speaking South African is an Afrikaner, however, they have always been used interchangeably in South Africa. The white group in South Africa has always been divided into English and Afrikaans speaking categories...right or wrong this is how it has been. Only about 8% of all South Africans speak English as their home language(their are 11 official languages), however, a large portion of the population can speak English and most companies use it as their official company language,it is also a compulsory subject at school level.

A. Hi Anria, Yes, I know people from Colombia and Argentina with that surname. It is Italian, it does not mean anything in Spanish, and I don't know about its origins in Italy, other than it seems to be from the Piemonte region.
