Activism, in a general sense, can be described as intentional action to bring about social change, political change, economic justice, or environmental wellbeing. This action is in support of, or opposition to, one side of an often controversial argument. The word "activism" is often used synonymously with protest or dissent, but activism can stem from any number of political orientations and take a wide range of forms, from writing letters to newspapers or politicians, political campaigning, economic activism (such as boycotts or preferentially patronizing preferred businesses), rallies, blogging and street marches, strikes, both work stoppages and hunger strikes, or even guerrilla tactics. In some cases, activism has nothing to do with protest or confrontation: for instance, some religious, feminist or vegetarian/vegan activists try to persuade people to change their behavior directly, rather than persuade governments to change laws. The cooperative movement seeks to build new institutions which conform to cooperative principles, and generally does not lobby or protest politically. Bob Barker, Betty White. Answered by tidbit - Sun Dec 2 19:04:04 2007 Why do gay rights activists insist on comparing their situation to the Civil Rights Movement? Q. Yes, they are fighting for rights, but they have not gone through segregation, and as much discrimination. There have never been any law abiding "No gays allowed" signs on any buildings. The movements are very different. Asked by Byron, The Redeemer - Sun Jan 18 01:36:16 2009 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. Civil rights are rooted in moral authority, while homosexual rights are rooted in the lack of moral restraint. Trying to undo the damage of years of a race of people in slavery was the right thing to do, whereas trying to change laws solely because of the decisions of a group of people is not the right thing. According to the Constitution, all men have God-given rights. It was because of these rights Martin Luther King Jr. and others fought for freedom. The Constitution guaranteed us rights to vote, rights to buy property. It guaranteed us certain unalienable rights. If I define marriage as between a man and a woman. Q. If nature made carnivorous animals, why can't humans be evolved to eat animals as well? Asked by metacomet - Sun Aug 24 20:06:45 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Carnivorous animals are just doing what they have to in order to survive. They must kill in order to eat. This is entirely different to human beings killing or torturing animals for prestige, profit or 'fun'. There is nothing wrong with eating other animals, provided those animals are kept and killed in a humane manner. Animal rights activists are opposed to the cruel treatment of animals - keeping battery hens in tiny, cramped cages, for example, or pouring shampoo into the eyes of rabbits to test how much it hurts, or killing upwards of fifty mink just so you can wear their skins, or shooting a lion just so you can hang its head on your wall.
