What types of activism is good, and what types of activism is bad?
Q. I always hear so many remarks about liberals and their activism and their opinions, but aren't most of what they do a good thing? Most are for human rights and making the world a better place, what is bad in this?

How do judicial advocates for restraint and activism use the power of the judicial branch to make policy?
Q. How do judicial advocates for restraint and activism use the power of the judicial branch to make policy? Is there any example?
Asked by hinangel - Wed Nov 21 03:05:52 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The judiciary cannot, by design, make policy. Policy, however, is open to interpretation and such interpretation is the role of the judiciary. Any interpretation that runs contrary to the preferred interpretation of any particular interest may be cited as an example of "the judicial branch making policy". That is the prerogative of the interest; there is no objective measure. This question is as leading as the (absurd) argument of intelligent design. Your bias is shamelessly obvious.

Q. How is judicial activism both praised and criticized?

A. Judaical activism is praised by neo-constructionists who feel the court system should use their power to re-define the Constitution to fit new times... fill in any vague areas in the Constitution Judicial Activism is criticized by traditional Constitutionalists who feel creating policy and redefining the Constitution is not the role of the court system... and impairs the Constitutional Amendment system from functioning the way the founding fathers intended The founding fathers wrote the Constitution and an Amendment system for that Constitution...they clearly meant for the Legislation branch of the government to make laws and policies... and the Judicial branch to determine if the laws and policies were consistent with that… [cont.]

Why are Rabbis today afraid to talk about politics and social activism?
Q. I grew up in the 1960s and 70s and listened to sermons that meant something. Whether it was about Israel, the Vietnam War, Watergate, MLK, The Iran Hostage crisis, Soviet Jewry etc. And of course there were the typical jewish issues, such as intermarriage, anti-semitism, the Holocaust, etc. Today it seems Rabbis are afraid to discuss important issues or politicize. Why? Where is the social activism in the sermons?
Asked by atomicdoug171 - Wed Sep 17 22:28:16 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, speaking as a rabbi, I'm not sure you're right about that as an overall trend. I know that many rabbis will be talking over the coming holidays about the war in Iraq, about health care, about poverty and other "social activism" topics. I will be talking about Israel on Rosh Hashanah. It may be that the rabbi at your shul has been shying away from these issues, but others are not. It is definitely true that sermons receive less attention today than they used to. The formality of the sermon, as a form, is not in keeping with the way people like to communicate these days. ("Yahoo! Answers" might be a good example of what people DO like, these days.) So there is less emphasis on the sermonizing, more emphasis on study, discussion… [cont.]

Read about plum island and lab 257. Read about storage of nuclear waste. Learn about Hanford Washington and how people got greater doses of radiation than at Chernobyl from radioactive iodine. But you dont see this on the news. F*** politics, F*** the media that is the biggest joke ever. You think you have rights??? Read about George Bush's grandfather graverobbing Geronimo's grave. Q. Do you think there should be a link between good moral character and political activity?
Asked by Moonlight - Tue May 26 05:37:19 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't think there always is; you have many examples of moral and ethical politicians who have been brought down by scandals and indecent actions. Eliot Spitzer is the perfect example; powerful, very motivated and bulldog-ish on crime, yet fell because he had himself morally violated his wife's trust and illegally hired a prostitute. You have many people who have incredibly stories on their activism; Malcolm X was and continues to be one of my favorite figures in history, yet for half his life he hustled, gambled, and ran around with a crowd many would consider unpleasant. He admitted this, and despite his problems and continuing issues with dealing with his beliefs on Jews (he was slightly anti-Semitic, not horribly but did have a… [cont.]

What can we do to stop the judicial activism of conservative Supreme Court justices?
Q. First, they did whatever it took to please their pro-gun interpretation of the 2nd Amendment in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). And now they've done their best to help empower big business with the Citizens United v. Federal Election Comm'n case. Too bad conservatives can't act objectively in the honorable position of interpreting the law, right?

Asked by soccergirl14 - Thu Apr 22 21:36:59 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Honestly not. Anyone can join a group, but a click isn't as tangible as either an armed revolution, or large peaceful demonstration. Anyone can complain or ask for about things, but creating change takes more than that, it takes action. Examples of action that achieved changes can go from the American Revolution, other nations wars of independence, Poland's solidarity movement, Gandhi in India, among many other things.

What are some jobs or careers that involve animal activism or helping animals?
Q. Any ideas which you could go to school for?
Asked by Donna - Thu Feb 5 10:03:16 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Being involved in the animal welfare movement is not limited to protesting or physically rescuing animals. In fact these type of activities are the most reviled and probably the least successful in terms of animals saved. But all organizations function like a company and as such need the same type of people you would see in an office. So accountants, lawyers/lobbyists, business graduates etc all can find a careers in environmental and animal welfare organizations such as Greenpeace, WWF etc and yes, even PETA. Sciences include Zoology,Biology, Marine Biology etc. And then after that, you can move on to Veterinary Medicine. And really, you don't need to enroll in any specific course of study to be active. Most organizations take on… [cont.]

What is a better use of money and resources, actually doing charity work or political activism?
Q. The democrats spend Billions donating to candidates, on things like ACORN, Moveon.org, and thousands of other political groups all going after the government to take care of the poor. If that time, money, and other resources were actually spent helping the poor and giving to effective charities, do you think that we would be better off as a country? Basically, If the money spent on political activism were given to those in need and good charities, and the time spent doing the political activism where spent volunteering for charities and helping our neighbors out, would this country be better off?
Asked by Freedom4 - Sun Aug 16 09:05:47 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Democrats do not want to help that poor. They want to help themselves. They want to keep the poor poor, and dependent on the government because as the poor dig out of poverty, they begin to vote republican...so if the poor go away, so does the democrat party. Of course they want to keep them poor. Democrats put politics ahead of all else. Also, It is amazing...just like in taxes for entitlement programs, political activists are not spending their own money. They convince the lower middle class dems to contribute the millions that they spend. Dems are great at spending other people's money.

Asked by ttme01 - Sun Jul 13 18:21:39 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Popular misconceptions are more powerful than the truth. The example: Economists have, for many years, said among themselves that higher fuel prices are like a tax on everything. To an economist that means that higher fuel prices have a similar effect as a sales tax on the price of everything in the economy because it raises prices across the board. It does not mean that some evil entity is taxing everything you do or buy. The comparison is merely intended to show how higher fuel prices slow sales of all products and services in the same way that taxes do. Recently an economist said "higher fuel prices are like a tax on everything" when he was a guest on a television news program. The news-reader took up the quote without… [cont.]

Using MMS (picture messaging) you can send out videos, images, audio, and text. Cellyspace allows you to give your alert a unique keycode for people to sign up with (Text environment to 33563) as well as forms you can put on your website.
